Preferences

Klondike remembers your selections in the Preferences dialog from one run to the next. This dialog allows you to choose the game, set options for play, and customize the use of color in the game. Choose Preferences... from the Klondike menu to bring up the Preferences dialog and modify your selections at any time. Click the OK button to make your new selections take effect, or Cancel to discard changes.

Preferences Dialog

Make your game selection using the popup list at the top of the Preferences dialog. If you change the game selection and click OK while a game is in progress, Klondike displays an alert asking you to decide if you want to end the current game and begin playing the new game, or continue as if you had not chosen a different game.

A set of check boxes is available to choose options for playing the games.

When Sound on is selected, Klondike will produce sound effects at the start of each game and whenever you win a game.

Selecting Casino scoring lets you keep score according to the common wagering scheme (see Scoring) instead of Klondike's original video-game style scoring.

Turn three allows you to choose whether you want cards from the deck turned up three at a time (checked) or one at a time in Klondike, Canfield and Racing Demons.

Play on Kings modifies the rules of Golf to permit a Queen or an Ace to be played on a King. According to strict Golf rules, no cards may be played on Kings.

If Scale to fit is selected, Klondike will try to keep all the cards visible in the window. If a column grows so that the bottom card overlaps the bottom of the window, Klondike will rescale the cards to fit that column in the window. Klondike will never try to reduce the size of the cards beyond that used in its minimal-width window. At the beginning of each game, Klondike scales the cards to fill the current width of the game window.

The Color options available are Card Backs... and Background.... The card backs and window background will be displayed in the colors you choose by selecting the Card Backs... and Background... buttons.

In addition to a slider to set the overall animation speed, there are three checkboxes to control the animation effects.

You can get a game started most quickly if you uncheck Deal Cards. Instead of animating the arranging of cards for the game, Klondike will just display the complete layout almost immediately for each new game. While Klondike is dealing the cards using animation, you can bypass the animation by pressing the Escape key or the combination Cmd-.

If Move Cards is checked, Klondike will animate the movement of cards when you make a move by double-clicking.

When Finish Game is checked, Klondike will count the game won when the last face-down card has been turned up (or in FreeCell when no lower-valued cards are buried under higher-valued cards), then automatically move the remaining cards to the foundations. This option has no effect for Golf.

The Expansion Font popup at the bottom of the window allows you to choose the font Klondike uses to display enlarged suit symbols. Only fonts which contain suit symbols (Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs) in the proper Unicode positions will be listed.
